  • Background
    • Established April 2015  by class of 70-71
    • Partnered with Beaverton Education Fund (501c Non Profit)
      • BEF provides donor relations, as well as financial, accounting and project support
  • Strategy
    • Maximize additional resources to provide means for optional class and extracurricular activities to develop career and personal interests
    • Empower alumni and the community to resolve issues that stem from educational funding cutbacks
    • Establish and maintain a permanent private resource for issues that stem from education cutbacks
  • The endowment and current terms fund make up current donor choices
    • Endowment fund – permanent June 2019
    • Fund reinvestment for current spending needs when funds are not available
    • Stimulate student interest in exploring career and personal development
      • Performance, field trips, displays, conferences, exhibits
  • Alumni and community funded with BEF support

  • What is the Go Warriors! AHS Opportunity Fund? What does it do?
    • Engage alumni and alumni businesses to supplement community support

    • Repeatable model which can be used by grade / middle / and other high schools
  • Why will it make a difference?
    • Through funded group activity all students can build their post high school resume
    • Encourage activity innovation for staff and students by providing seed money to explore new ideas and approaches
    • Change the wider narrative currently focused on family income to student and school activities and accomplishments
    • Eventually reduce the amount of fundraising needed to gain more time to explore
  • Opportunities
    • Every year between 4-6 classes, many with families, gather for reunions during the summer – tourist opportunity
    • Many alumni owned businesses in WaCo and Portland – networking opportunity
    • Early alumni class are retiring or just retired – services opportunity
    • Approx 19,200 alumni have an emotional connection to AHS
    • If 25% of alumni and community gave $20 annually to Go Warriors capital investment would expand by $96,000 a year
  • AHS is a public high school with a supplemental endowment fund to stimulate student interest in exploring care and personal development
  • Recent accomplishments
    • Reached minimum endowment level $25,000 June 2018

5 – Spotlight Speaker – Imagine Possibilities Center

  • Serve children and adults with developmental disabilities
  • Founded 60 years ago (children not allowed to attend public school at the time)
  • Today serve adults, started as children only
  • More resources available for children so they now focus more on adults
  • Therapeutic yoga, horticulture therapy, music therapy, cooking club, arts and crafts
  • Sensory Garden
  • Volunteer with Cat Adoption team, Oregon Food bank
  • Need community support
    • Golf Charity Tournament at Pumpkin Ridge Golf
    • Auction November 2nd at Embassy Suites near Washington Square
  • Day Center, not residential

  • Social/media for business owners
  • He has spent one million dollars on Facebook ads, and one million on YouTube and his businesses have seen growth in the double digits
  • June 2016 Facebook launches ads matching user data with consumer data
  • Google followed
  • Creating value through interaction is far more important than solving a consumer’s problem in 30 seconds
  • How to get business
    • Get and maintain brand promise
    • Show people you can help them by helping them
    • Keep them informed, entertained, and engaged
    • You want to be a trusted advisor/guide/mentor
    • Explain your value proposition
  • To be successful on social media tell consumers what they want to hear, not what you want to tell them
  • Get attention with new product announcements, community or charity event, paper-flyer-fact sheet, videos and slideshows.
  • Rather than a restaurant saying “Lasagna is $9.99” ask the potential consumer:  “Are you hungry?” and show an image of good food.
  • You built an audience now what?  Your audience is your automated sales machine
  • Marketing should start conversations
  • Q & A session:  
    • Post others reviews with permission to do so only
    • Are Social Media “check ins” beneficial?  Google tracks who comes into businesses. If you have wifi turned on on your phone business routers will pick it up and track numbers of people who walked in the door.   
    • Google reviews, Facebook are better than Yelp (Yelp reviews can be removed and are not trustworthy)  
    • Yelp user base has dropped by 40%

  • Oregon residency:  87.1% white, 2.2% blacks
  • Don grew up in DC and was present for the riots after MLK was killed
  • Grew up with no whites in his neighborhood, only saw them on tv
  • God created us all so he had no negative ideas of people, everyone was the same
  • MLK’s death happened when he was 10 yrs old  
  • Riots started 2 days after
  • National guard troops, and the curfew, made many feel the world was ending.  He can remember seeing troops on the street.
  • Moved away shortly after.
  • Moved to Oregon in 1990. Graduated 1994 from University of Oregon. Wanted to teach English in Korea but was denied as not the “typical American”. Mayor of Eugene wrote letter of objection. Hired instead by city of Hillsboro Water Department as first black hire.
  • He has faced discrimination, has had officers called on him when working on the job, but recognizes officers are people too.
  • Stopped by police for no reason 16 times in Oregon (walking, on bus, driving). Not once in DC.
  • Sees police as humans and tries to deescelate situation.  
  • We are not treated equally, it would be better if we embrace our diversity.

  • April 17 Kathryn Harrington will give the “State of the County” address 5pm at Conestoga
  • AHS Employment Fair Tuesday March 12 8am-10am will provide students with opportunities to meet potential employers for summer and training for career
  • AHS Theatre production of “Little Shop of Horrors” March 7, 8, 9, 14, 15, 16.  Tickets available at AlohaTheatre.org

    • The recent BSD threats created a “Lock Out” which cancelled Shop with a Cop, so they did all the shopping for the kids and hosted a holiday party for the kids and their families.  Over 100 people came, every family was able to attend (all families are under privileged) Events like this fosters good relationships with law enforcement. It turned out well and gave opportunity to interact with the families
  • TVWD – federal funding helpful in keeping rate increases under double digits, rates going up because of need of seismic upgrades, etc

  • Enjoyed high tech job, got to see how others work and live all around the world

  • Wanted to work for community, stepped back from Intel and got involved in community through CPO and Metro Transportation,
  • encouraged to run and ran for Metro in 2005.
  • Ran and won
  • Ran and won in Nov. for Washington County Chair,  won w/ 54%
  • Pleased to serve county
  • Why she ran –
    • Love of Washington County, serving and working for the county is close to her heart
    • Andy Duyck told her he would not run for reelection so she took it into consideration, did research and chose to run,  got lots of community support
    • Was able to run and build support despite not being able to campaign in summer due to back issues
  • What does Washington County do?
  • In 1964 the  Charter for Washington County was established.  Voters decided on 5 commissioners who are elected and serve the whole county.  4 district commissioners and 1 chair.
  • Chair responsibility is to make sure whole board of 5 has an agenda.  Serves as spokesperson for county
  • Chair position is full time, district is part time
  • Washington County does:
    • Zoning for rural areas
    • Ensure funds for courts, jails, juvenile detention, help sheriff
  • Sheriff is an elected position
  • Safety policy for whole county
  • Takes care of zoning for unincorporated areas (UA)
  • Takes Care of land use and transportation of UAs
  • Takes care of Clean Water Services
  • Delicate balance between typical county jurisdiction and rarities like UA
  • Metro works with transportation
  • Also works with Urban Growth
  • Washington County has Parks-Properties
  • Metro has regional parks and visitor venues (zoo, theatres, Events Center under construction)
  • County takes care of garbage collection, metro makes sure you have services.
  • 102 and Measure 26-119 (Affordable Housing) Washington County has lots of work to do to put together implementation strategy for homes for 12000 people.
  • Openness and Transparency are important to her.  Wants to work towards this information being more readily available.  For example on their website. You should not have to request it, it should  be readily available
  • Swearing In Tuesday Jan 8th, 2019 at 8 am.
  • State of county report currently you have to pay $35 for it, she thinks that should be available for free to community instead.
  • Plans to meet with city councils and local CPOs
  • Visit meetings to connect with community.  Both to be available, but to also hear from community and see plans
  • Does not feel Government should be hands off, feels Government should be helpful in getting people back on track not just through affordable housing.
  • Would like to see more of a reflection of our community within the County – ethnicity, financial, age, culture, etc.  Not afraid to work on issues.
  • Would like to see streamlining of community zoning.  It should not take 3 years for permits to go through.

Dick Schouten – Washington County Commissioner District 1

  • Next summer further planning for 185th and TV shopping area, finish zoning and look at private partner partnerships to improve area.  Working on 198th improvement. TV highway – need increase in bus service quantity and quality.

  • Mediates community issues and officer issues
  • Works to bring peace
  • Our behaviors have an impact on each other
  • Hostile work environment remediation can take 180 days, she can usually work to a resolution in just 2 hours
  • In conflict people confuse facts with judgement
  • In conflict we go to our primitive mind or our survival brain
  • We go to defense rather than rational
  • Shame leads to blame – leads to fear- leads to defensiveness
  • Works with couples and families
  • We all have our own perceptions and interpretations
  • We need to listen to and understand each other
  • Dispute resolution center provides free services through mayor’s office
  • J. Sievert congregation used her services and they were helpful, and asks if  shame has to follow blame.
  • Process – pre-interview each person so she can help sort out issues and ensure each person gets to share without interruption and judgment.  Has each person ask and answer questions and teaches people how to negotiate
  • Able to avoid getting involved because she is an outsider and this is not her issue
  • We as people often say things not meant to be offensive, meant to be complimentary but it can easily get misinterpreted
  • All our emotions are necessary for survival we just don’t always know how to manage emotional pain.
  • Brains don’t fully develop until the age of 25.  If kids don’t learn the language of emotion they just do what their parents do.
  • She works to mediate and teach kids through resolution rather than punishment/jail

  • Spike in property crimes – vehicle and mailboxes in particular, trying to develop a new routine “#9pm” encouraging people to turn on outside lights and lock up at 9pm each night.  Hope it can decrease property crimes
  • ABA will have tent at the Aloha Christmas Tree Lighting. Members can volunteer to man our tent, let Brian know if you want to help.  WE NEED A TREE
  • Agape Community Insurance is sponsoring “Blankets for the Homeless” and their office is a drop off site running Nov – Feb.  New or gently used blankets accepted.

  • Board Elections are next Month.  Tabitha McCampbell and Brian Merritt’s terms are up and both will run again.  Mike Schmidt and Sally still have one more year. Mike Holcomb is retiring and will not run.  Looking for nominations for board election next month

  • M. Holcomb – Holcomb Computer Services – retiring, website/email shutting down.  No business concerns. No continuation plan. Not forgetting what he’s done the past 20 years, still enjoys it, and he will be available to help if you need via phone.  
  • E. Yon – John L Scott – involved in Homes for Heroes program w/Fairway Mortgage.  Not many know about Homes for Heroes, trying to get the word out more.
  • L. Heidrich – Fairway Independent Mortgage (former Guild) Changed to support community with Homes for Heroes.  Want to help community members who have served our country get homes
  • *B. Merritt – Minuteman Mortgage.  (Former Movement) Challenges are getting the word out about brokers vs lenders.  He can get better interest rates, trying to let people know
  • M. Masterson – McDonalds.  Trying To get word out for fundraising programs for schools.  Coupons for positive behavior, etc. Biggest challenge is school funding knowledge.  Wants to help schools.
  • K. Bolin – Edward Jones – homelessness in the area are taking advantage of empty property behind business.  Would love to move but there are no office spaces available in Aloha. Hopeful for move to Alexander as they begin rebuilding property.  Concern over how slow community moves. How do we attract businesses? How do we allow businesses to grow?
  • F. Anderson -Retired –  Concerns over keping jobs in the area.  Concerns about transportation availability in area.  Wants more good businesses
  • C. Garrett – Volunteer coordinator for Hillsboro School Districts Secondary Schools
  • Pat Garrett – Washington County Sheriff –  Aloha is ground zero for urban unincorporated areas they serve.  Look forward to knowing how they can be better about serving our community.   Low employment rate, in need for more sheriffs in our area. Community members who want to do important rewarding work should apply.
  • K. Waddell – Comcast – Provides security to businesses, people are caught breaking and entering on camera, businesses would not know without security cameras,  Wants to benefit other businesses.
  • J. Rump – Family Heritage – provides cancer insurance to small businesses and families.  Can be devastating. Pay family directly to help with loss of income and what insurance does not cover
  • K. Larmanger- ComforCare- biggest challenge is unemployment makes potential employees harder to find.  Hard to alert community to services available!
  • D. Atkins – Key Bank –  small business banker. Bank/cc fraud overwhelms clients – trying to help before the problem grows.
  • A. Oliva – NW Chinese Academy- just moved to Blanton and 170th,  Challenge is to increase enrollment. Mandarin language and global citizens.
  • T. Greeno – Transaction Realty NW – Wants to give,  Community connection desired.
  • E. Ermita – Touching Lives Corporation – wants to assist elderly citizens
  • E. Rawlinson – WCSO serves Aloha.  Car Break ins are a problem. Don’t leave things in car, report it, Do you have a camera that caught something?  Report it.
  • A. Terrones – WCSO Community outreach.  Trying to fill Darlene’s shoes, learning how to serve us.
  • C. Wiard- Pamplin Media Group – own all community papers that are not Oregonian. Misconception that they are all only print.  They’re Not, have website. Cover Aloha where Oregonian may not.
  • N. Barkette – Peppermill Restaurant – Concern is decline in business, not sure why historically.  Want to ask community what we can do better? How can we best serve our customers and potential customers.  Fixture in Aloha How can we bring you all back?
  • J. Doane – Aloha Community Library – Community Room open!  Library programs, political programs. Membership on Board -need members, need to represent diversity of community  How do we get more members?
  • J. Doane – TVWD – Keep clean water flowing, building for the future and keeping it affordable for all
  • S. McDowell- A Cut above Pawn – collateral loans, high end retail,  challenge is getting customers aware of jewelry, tools, instruments, electronics, etc.  Christmas shopping can be done there! Hired onsite jeweler
  • C. Watkins.  Retired diamond setter.   A Cut Above Pawn, nothing he can’t do.  Likes Aloha, challenge is letting people know he’s there.
  • *T. Campbell – School to Career Program – BSD/HSD help students get placed with  business events. Need businesses to partner with S2C to train new workforce. Internships, etc
  • *S. Fabre – Agape Community Insurance – challenge – good employees, homeless and drug use in mall.  Sad to have to consider locking door to business during work day. Call when you see something suspicious.  Board president, learning as we go. How do we rebuild Aloha, connections? How do we work as an association to reach out to each other.

5 – Spotlight Speaker – Mark Forker – Willamette West Habitat for Humanity

  • Habitat for Humanity has many volunteer opportunities that go beyond construction
    • Select families – review finances for applicants, interview families to determine need, see where they currently live and what they experience.
    • Party Planning – help organize fundraiser programs. Funding comes primarily from community.
    • Repair program for lower income homeowners.  This program helps approx 20+ families a year. This program helps build ramps and other updates to ensure home is accessible by all abilities
    • Home Depot helps by providing grants for Veterans.  Veterans in turn will set up a table at Home Depot to explain the program to shoppers and other Veterans.
    • Community members 18 and up can volunteer in any position.  14 is the minimum age to volunteer. Volunteers ages 16-17 can do some minimal work such as yard work.
  • There are over 100 applicants for the self help housing program
    • Applicants have to take 500 hours of family literacy classes, home maintenance classes, and then can buy  a house for affordable no interest payments (only 28% of income)
    • Most families in the program make around $25,000 a year
  • Willamette West Habitat for Humanity Neighborhood Revitalization Committee is currently looking for a property or neighborhood in Aloha which needs a lift up.

  • Aloha Community Library has a new Community Room

  • Thursday August 30th – 11:30-2:00 – AHS Warrior Ohana Day – Aloha High School is looking for businesses to participate by setting up booths on the Football Field where they can visit with students and staff to build connections.  Thursday will be a modified schedule to allow student groups to go through stations
  • Friday August 31st – Scooping with a Cop – Farmington Mall Shopping Center
  • Willamette West Habitat for Humanity is currently building two new neighborhoods in Beaverton
