Meeting Educational Program:
Breast Friends: Becky Olson
Three time breast cancer survivor Becky Olson is a long time Aloha/Beaverton resident. She started breast friends after her first diagnosis and became a full-time nonprofit after her 3rd diagnosis. They now have affiliates in Florida and Pennsylvania. There is an open house tonight at their office in Tigard catered by Olive Garden. Businesses and supervisors try to stay safe regarding privacy laws, but this often keeps people so far back that the employee feels completely unsupported at work. This is a difficult line to draw and leaves the employee feeling unsupported. If the person gives permission to share their story then encouragement and support can begin. It is important to have support and be reached out to. Especially during the alone time when the employee is home during treatment. You can only share what the employee said is ok to share and nothing more. Sympathetic boss/supervisor is supportive. If you treat the employee as though they are sick this is not supportive and does not promote a healthy employee. You not only discourage the returning employee, but if you lose them because they feel unwelcome, then you have lost their skills and you now have to train a new employee.
Congressional bills being introduced to change the mammogram guidelines from 40 to 50. Needs to stay at 40, write your congress person today. Their Gala is May 7th, 2016. For more information about best approaches stop by the Breast Friends Office or go to their website for a Tips Brochure. http://www.breastfriends.org/
